Atherton table land to Mission Beach

on

We woke up to this view of the Atherton table lands:

The night before F had seen a kangaroo in the back yard. So first thing this morning was to check whether it was still there but unfortunately it wasn’t.

The night had been colder than anything we have had lately (temperatures dropped down to 10 degrees Celcius). So we got our fleece jackets out of the suitcases again.

The table lands are a flat plateau surrounded by rolling hills. Large cattle and fruit and vegetables farms make up the area.

We filled up the car before heading off to Millaa Millaa. Halfway there we stopped at a lookout from where you could see the wide open country side.

From there we drove to Millaa Millaa Falls. They cascade down 18.3m into an icy pool. F and B dared to test the waters. However, they did not make it all the way to the waterfall because it was breathtakingly cold.

The area surrounding the waterfall is full of palm trees and thick vegetation.

Looks a bit like ‘Jurassic Park’, doesn’t it? I love the sight of those fern trees:

On our way to the beach we snacked on some bananas that we bought along the road.

For the first time in my life I had seen how bananas grow. It seems to be a difficult task as all the farms we saw along the way were quarantine zones against pests and deceases. Anyone entering has to have their cars and boots sprayed down.

Enjoying the fresh bananas we decided to make fruits our lunch as well and got some avocados,  watermelon, mango and passion fruits at a street side stall.

This is how K decorated her plate:

The fruit tasted so good and juicy! We all agreed that we had never tasted a mango like this one before and the kids enjoyed the taste of the passion fruits which they recognized from their multi- vitamin juices back home.

Mission Beach turned out to be quite windy and it was fairly cold. But it is an incredible place! Another piece of paradise. That’s the view from our room:

Because it was so chilly F and I did not last too long at the pool, despite the glass walls protecting us from the ocean winds. So we decided to go for cocktails at the bar instead. The kids layered up with towels as blankets and stayed put- need I say that wifi was best at that spot? They hadn’t been able to talk to their friends for quite a while so they weren’t ready to give up any online time because of a bit of cold wind.

[My personal “Italian Stalion”- cocktail]

Just before the sun started to go down we began walking along the beach to the place we had picked for dinner. It was called “The Shrub” and turned out to be a layedback restaurant with burgers and beer at a budget- a typical beach/ backpacker place with excellent food.
