A bit of winter in the Austrian Alps

on

Skiing wasn’t really meant for us this year. Instead of going for a whole week like we have been doing for the past few years this year we were only able to get a few days in.

So when my dear hubby suggested to head for the Hochzeiger in the scenic Pitztal in Tirol, Austria, I was excited to get a bit of exercise on my new skies.

The Hochzeiger resort allows for skiing to up to 2.395 meters above sea level. With 40 kilometers of pistes there is excitement for everyone. The resort is ideal with kids and beginners too as it has wide and easy slopes. But for those who want to test their skills it also has a few quite challenging areas with black pistes and mogul slopes. The kids favorite is the famous “Kanonenrohr” (which means “muzzle”): it’s fast and steep and it culminates in a run that gives you the idea of flying.

Originally we chose the Pitztal because we had heard that it was a very kids friendly skiing resort and that is definately true. Every lift has staff to help kids (which we found is not the case in all resorts anymore).  For smaler kids there is a kindergarten that offers adventures for the little ones like building an igloo. And the older kids can learn skiing or snow boarding with teachers that make the learning experience fun.
When our kids were smaller both the kindergarten and the kids classes gave us the opportunity to enjoy a bit of parent time. Nowadays we all go together.

Somehow skiing for us seams to be about good food too. And as we are huge fans of the smaller, family type huts we keep coming back to the Stalder Hütte. If you want to go there and give it a try order their pizza- it is delicious! The Stalder Hütte staff is very friendly and welcoming and we feel like returning to friends every time we go there.

Unfortunately our two days this time were cut short by the Foehn storms that hit Austria on Saturday. Because of the strong winds some of the lifts had to stop working. So we ended our day on skies around noon. The kids thought this was great because this way they got to do a bit of shopping in Innsbruck on our way home!
