Grand Canyon to Lake Powell

on

The day started with a great breakfast at RP’s Stage Shop in Tusayan. They offer excellent coffee and delicious sandwiches. I so much prefer these small places serving freshly made food to all these commercial chains!

After checking out of the hotel we headed to Page on Lake Powell. As you leave the area you drive along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. We stopped at a few of the view points as we were not quite ready to leave the Grand Canyon behind.

The most beautiful of all the view points was the Watch Tower at Grand Canyon National Park Dessert View. If I could plan this trip over again this is where I would watch the sunset over the canyon.

We continued through wide open country passing only a few scattered houses along the way. We only stopping at a stall that sold tribal jewelry and dream catchers. A girl just can’t say no to these things…

The area is very dry and hot until all of a sudden you see Lake Powell glittering in the distance. The lake is a reservoir created by the flooding of Glen Canyon by the Glen Canyon Dam. Located in the middle of the dessert the lake seems almost surreal but is beautiful nonetheless.

As we had recently seen a documentary on cooking in a smoker we decided that today’s lunch had to be Texan when we came across “Big John’s Texan BBQ” in Page. The ribs fell right off the bone. Combined with the tangy barbeque sauce we were licking our fingers quite literally. I was just glad that nobody checked our cholesterol levels after the meal!

One of our bucket list items was seeing the Horse Shoe Bend of the Colorado river. So we drove there. Signs indicated to put good shoes and take at least one bottle of water each. They were not kidding! We were totally exhausted when we returned to our car with the heat and walking in the sand.

The meal and the hike made us so lazy that we spent the afternoon lying on the pool of the hotel before watching another beautiful sunset over Lake Powell.
