Angel Wings by Colette Miller
The first thing we had to do on day 2 was to hunt for the Instagram- worthy Angel Wings. Los Angeles based artist Colette Miller has started painting these wings all across Los Angeles as part of her Global Angel Wings Project. As her website states these wings “… are human sized interactive public art, wings that people take photos with and thus become part of the work”. She now has painted wings all over the world.
If you want to find her art her website provides a Google Map of all their locations.
My girls had seen the wings on Instagram and wanted to have their pictures taken in front of them. As I try to be private about our personal life I will not publish any of the photos we took of ourselves but you can see many examples on Colette Miller’s Instagram site.
Hollywood Walk of Fame
Having taken wings pictures in two seperate locations both my teenagers were calm enough to explore LA further. So next we headed to the Walk of Fame. It is basically a sidewalk that runs along 15 blocks. The stars are located on both sides of
Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street.
The whole thing looks like the worst tourist trap you can imagine. But it is something one has to see at least once in a life, right?! So we went up and down the boulevard looking for VIPs we liked.
Talking to my kids about the stars made me feel real old. I get it that names like Eva Gardner don’t ring a bell with them, but Eddy Murphy?!? They knew Emma Watson but not Emma Thompson… But then on the other hand I did not know many of the names Daughter 1 photographed either.
We passed the Dolby Theater where the Oscars take place since 2002 and went into the Chinese Theatre. From the gallery in the shopping center we caught the first sight of the Hollywood Sign in the distance.
We hoped we could get a closer look at the sign from the Griffith Observatory. Clearly we were not the only ones who had this idea. So when we joined the traffic going up the hill we were stuck in a traffic jam. At least we got to drive by the Observatory. Several cars before us had to leave the road one bend below towards the Greek theater. Once again we were lucky and they reopened the road right in front of us.
While Hubby drove the car slowly around the parking lot I jumped out, quickly took this shot of Los Angeles from above and then jumped back in again. I found that the view of the Hollywood sign from here was not much of an improvement from the view of the Chinese Theatre, so we did not stop.
But the drive down on the other side of the hill is definately worth the trip alone. You drive along the most beautiful villas! To top things off we then drove along Mulholland Drive swooning over the villas there too.
Heading back to the hotel our last adventure of this holiday was a ride through Rodeo Drive to look at all the fancy shops at least from the outside.
And by pure chance we also drove by the Fox Studios.
While Hubby and the girls wanted to go back to the hotel to hit the pool I decided to take the car for a last spin around Santa Monica were I walked around a bit.
With this a wonderful holiday came to an end. The next day we drove out to the airport, returned the rental and off we were on our way back home again.
