Perth to Cervantes

Germany to Australia is quite a trip. We left on Monday night and after two nights on the plane and an afternoon spent in Singapore airport we arrived in Perth at 4 o’clock in the morning. We were exhausted but also thrilled to start exploring.

When we initially planned the itinerary for our road trip we decided to leave visiting Perth for a later time and instead drive up the west coast to Cervantes right after picking up our rental at the airport. We were lucky and were upgraded to a 4×4 vehicle that would allow us to enter even those beach access roads and areas in national parks that are closed to regular cars.

On our way up State Route 60 we stocked up on groceries and water so we could be flexible about eating times and locations and had breakfast in a small cafe in an residential area.

Already when we left Perth it was raining on and off and it kept doing so for the rest of the day- typical winter weather in Australia. But fortunately there were also moments when the sun was coming through. So we took it slow and when we were stopping at the Wedge lookout to get a first glimpse of the ocean we spent some time napping in the car waiting for a rain shower to pass before we walked down to the beach.

Another detour we took from State Route 60 was Hangover Bay testing the 4- wheel drive for the first time. The drive was rewarded by a beautiful view over Indian Ocean.

Before we reached Cervantes on the Turquoise Coast we turned off the main road to drive to the Pinnacles in Nambung National Park.

We knew we would not last long that day but before turning in for an early night we stopped at Lake Thesis. Just as we arrived it started raining again and the perfect rainbow was framing a group of kangaroos in the distance. What a wonderful start for a road trip!
