Kalbarri National Park

We started the day with a visit to the Kalbarri Sky Walk in Kalbarri National Park. The impressive structure blends extremely well into its surroundings while providing visitors with a stunning view of the Murchison River.

From the Skywalk we drove just a few minutes to Nature‘s window, a whole in the rock framing a beautiful view of the rock formations. It took a while for us to be able to take a foto as a bus just had dumped a load of tourists and there was a queue, the only one we encountered so far on this trip. This gave us time to do some people watching. It never ceases to amaze me that there are tourists doing a class 3 trail (that involves a moderate amount of rock climbing) in flip flops!

As we had been sitting quite a lot lately, first on the planes then in the car we were eager to get some steps in and doing one of the hikes was just the perfect way to do this. From the z- bend picnic area you can walk down to the z- bend lookout where the river has carved tight bends into the Tumblagooda Sandstone gorge.

The River Loop hike is a class 4 hike down to the Murchison River that features a challenging descent which involves quite some rock climbing and using metal ladders to conquer the steepest bits. On the way up the trail we noticed a natural bee hive under one of the overhangs and watched fascinated how the bees built their hive.

A lot easier to get to is the Meanarra Hill Lookout that is even wheelchair accessible. It provides panoramic views over Kalbarri and the mouth of the Murchison River.

From the mountain we traveled back down to the ocean to see the Blue Holes, part of the Kalbarri beach. Under the rocks we saw an octopus that was trying to hide but hubby managed to lure him out.

As we were told that during the month of July you often see whales travel along the coast we went up to Red Buff for whale watching and sunset- and were rewarded with several groups of whales close to the shore.

If you are looking for a nice place to eat in Kalbarri try out Finlay’s Brewing Co. They brew their own beers. A must try is their Rusty Sailor (a ginger beer) or the Coral Coast Mid and if you like mussles give try their Chilli Mussels in housemade tomato concasse with toasted bread a try- I’ve never had better mussels before.
