Monkey Mia

After leaving Kalbarri town we headed to Hawks Head in Kalbarri National Park. We arrived at the right time, it was absolut quiet and you could hear nothing but bird song and the rushing of a waterfall in the distance. This country really makes you breath more calmly and slows you down, it’s so relaxing. Just let your eyes wander and enjoy the vast landscape.

Last stop in Kalbarri NP was the Ross Graham Lookout named after the first teacher at Kalbarri. He dedicated his short life to turning the area into a National Park in order to preserve the beauty of the land.

The drive from Kalbarri to Monkey Mia, our next destination, takes about 4,5 hours. You drive along huge farms but see not much else along the way until you reach Billabong. We stopped for coffee and filled up the car. This place is two gas stations, a small road house and a trucker motel- that‘s it, nothing more. And lots of road trains coming through (= very long tucks like the one in the photo below).

Another two hours later we turned off National Route 1 onto the World Heritage Drive to Monkey Mia. The region is called Shark Bay and is the traditional land of the Malgana people.

We stopped at beautiful Shell Beach. This beach is made up of small shells instead of sand. The water has twice the salinity as the open ocean, so you float better but come out of the water crusted in salt.

Next stop on our road trip was Eagle Bluff Look Out with a stunning view over a small island inhabited by many birds. It is a wild life protection area.

We reached our destination in Monkey Mia right before this beautiful sunset. Another day in paradise!
