Kimberleys: Lake Argyle

on

Today we stayed in the area around Lake Argyle. The Lake is a 2.000 square kilometers body of water and the largest reservoir in Australia. A dam was built early 1970 that created the current lake. The water is used for irrigation and for some power generation but has way more capacity then currently used.

We started by going to a few lookout points and then drove back and forth across the damn. The group then took off to visit the Durack Family homestead. For our fellow Australian group members this was a very big thing as the Durack Family was one of the larger and prominent Australian families with a lot of drama (a bit like Dallas and Dynasty apparently). The Durck family home in the Kimberlys was down at the bottom of the current lake Argyle and was moved stone by stone to the current homestead location.

After lunch back at our campsite we headed for the highlight of the day: sunset cruise at Lake Argyle. And for the first time this trip we did see quite a few freshwater crocodiles (“freshies”). Always impressive. We also did see some small wallabies and other animals.

Then the boot stopped and folks could jump in the lake for a sunset swim. With pool-noodles around the body, beer-cans were thrown in the water and some chips and crackers on a float made this a great experience. We had a dinner in the restaurant with yet another early nights sleep.
