Sensory garden at Whicher Ridge winery

The Margaret River region is known for it’s wines. Many wineries accept walk- ins but we decided to book a wine tasting beforehand. Through some research we found the Whicher Ridge Winery South of Busselton where Neil and Cathy Howard produce excellent wines. What makes their wine tasting special is their incredible sensory garden.

Next to their cellar door the Howards planted a garden that reflects the aromas of their wines. So while you smell and taste a glass of their produce Cathy explains the aromas and herbs you can taste in their wines. She also discusses texture and food pairings that their wines go with. However, Cathy made it clear that there is no „this wine only goes with that food“ but that your sensory memory acquired over a life time is more important to determine these decisions.

After pub lunch in Margaret River we drove further North to the Gabriel Chocolate factory, „Western Australia’s first bean to bar Chocolate Maker“, where we tasted their delicious single origin chocolates and finished with ice cream.

Time for some walking after indulging in todays pleasures- so we drove up to the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and walked up to the cape where we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Indian Ocean.

On our way back we drove through the lush Margaret River wine region and enjoyed the deep greens we had not seen on the first weeks of our trip.
