We left Sydney in the rain and with cloudy skies to head to Royal National Park, South of Sydney.
First stop was the park’s visitor centre in order to buy our park pass for the day.
After coffee at the charming Audley Dance Hall Cafe right next to the centre we headed to the small town of Bundeena and to Jibbon Beach.
Bundeena is also the starting point for the coast track that leads you to Wedding Cake Rock, a sandstone rock formation suspended 25 metres above sea level.
The formation is now closed off to the public by a fence as it is expected to break off in the near future. You can already see a large crack in the stones. The name Wedding Cake Rock derives from the sandstone layers of the rock that resemble a wedding cake. The whole formation is very unstable and visitors are being warned several times along the track not to go to close to the cliffs edge.
It takes about two hours return to get to Wedding Cake Rock but the outlook on the hike is well worth it. We had carried some wraps along for lunch and were enjoying the stunning views while we ate sitting on the cliff.
Wattamolla waterfalls were our next stop for the day and we enjoyed some time at the beautiful beach there. As we were off season and with mixed weather the beach was almost empty.
When you exit the Royal National Park to the South you start on Australia’s Grand Pacific Drive.
First attraction on the drive is Sea Cliff Bridge, a bridge that takes traffic out into the ocean.
Stop for the night was the beach town of Bulli were we stayed for two nights.
