Hubby got up really early and stepped outside for sunrise taking this wonderful picture. I slept a few minutes longer and almost missed the spectacle.
But sunrise wasn’t the real reason for getting up early. We wanted to head to the end of the park- or at least as far as you could go by car- to start on the hike up Telegraph Saddle on Mount Oberon.
It took us about an hour to reach the top of the mountain at an altitude of 558m above sea level. The hike itself is, well, boring. You basically walk up on an unsealed service road until you reach mobile phone towers. From there it gets a bit more interesting as you climb up rock steps until the vegetation opens up. And it opens up to this:
Breathtaking, isn’t?
After some wraps for lunch we headed for Squeaky Beach. The name of this beach derives from the white quartz sand that squeaks when you walk on it. Quite a funny sound!
Our original plan was to do some beach hopping to see the different beaches of the Wilson Promontory. But we did not want to leave Squeaky Beach as we had found such a nice spot in the shade overlooking the bay. So we stayed. And took a nap. And walked a bit. And stayed.
Until our conscience told us to go and explore more. So we packed up, skipped Picnic Beach and drove to Whisky Beach for a swim.
The waves were quite high and we jumped over them to not go under until we got tired.
What a wonderful day at Wilsons Promontory! Definitely a highlight of this trip.
