Melbourne- day 3

on

Despite the sweltering heat we headed for Melbourne center again as there were still a few things that we wanted to see. Amongst those were the small side roads and back alleys that are famous for their street art, the most famous of all being the AC/ DC Lane.

Next was Fitzroy Park, a lovely green haven in the city. It is here that you find James Cook’s cottage. James Cook set sail in 1768 with “secret orders from the British Admiralty to seek ‘a Continent or Land of great extent’ and to take possession of that country ‘in the Name of the King of Great Britain’.” (State Library NSW)

We strolled through the well cured gardens and passed by the Old Treasury Building.

Old Tram

From there we took the Tram 35 or the “Old Tram”. This tram is free of charge and takes you once around the free tram zone in the CBD. The idea is nice but this tram stops about every 50 meters at traffic lights or tram stops. So we left the tram after about half way and walked down through the CBD.

Melbourne

From here we took a regular tram to go back to St. Kilda Beach for fish & chips. Hoping to cool off I took my shoes off and waded in the ocean (we hadn’t thought about bringing swimming gear). However, the water was so warm that it did nothing to refresh from the days heat.

St. Kilda beach on a lazy Sunday evening

As temperatures did not drop during the night and our apartment did not have air conditioning our sleep was restless.
