Bay of Fires

Before leaving Bicheno we stopped at the blowhole. Having been disappointed by the one in Kiama this one lived up to its name. The incoming water sputtered through the hole high into the air. A fantastic spectacle!

Our destination was the Bay of Fires, one of Tasmania’s most stunning regions. Located on the edge of Mount William National Park, in the North-East of the island, the Bay of Fires goes from Binalong Bay to Eddystone Point. This conservation area offers crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches and unique orange granite rocks.

Humbug Point

Lonely Planet named the Bay of Fires as one of the world’s hottest travel destinations.

The bay was named by Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773 in response to the many Aboriginal fires he saw burning on its shore. (“Discover Tasmania”) The amount of fires made him think the area was densely populated.

We started at Binalong and drove down an unsealed road to Skeleton Point. While we were at the Bay of Fires it was never really crowded anywhere but Skeleton Point we had completely to ourselves making it a lovely spot to just sit and watch the ocean.

Binalong has a gorgeous bay with white sands and crystal clear water appearing blue in the sunlight.

Making our way further up the bay we stopped at a beach next to the road with calm water and a completely empty white beach. What a place to be!

Sloop Lagoon

From Binalong we made our way to The Gardens. This site was named by Lady Jane Franklin in 1835 when she came to Georges Bay with her husband, Sir John Franklin. Lady Jane rode to this area on her horse and finding acres of wildflowers, so she named it „The Gardens“.

We ended the day with dinner on the terrace of our cottage on a country farm close to St. Helens with a view into the eucalyptus trees.
