Garmisch Partenkirchen- Stepberg Alm

on

On day two of our trip the weather promised to be stable and we decided to tackle a more challenging hike. The owners of our accomodation had recommended the ascend to Stepberg Alm in Grainau.

We started on the trail from Almhütten Parkplatz and took the route following signs for “Gelbes Gwänd”. The trail is fairly steep and follows a narrow path through shaded forest above the Kramerlaine stream. You definitely have to choose your footwear well for this hike and we were glad that we had both swapped out our hiking boots from the previous day. Even though those were proper hiking boots and not the sneakers we had seen many people wear at the Partnachklamm the grip was not what we would have liked on the wet paths. The trail along the Gelbes Gwänd is narrow and you walk over tree roots and lots of gravel. As the incline follows a path that drops to one side we had to concentrate on every step.

The magnificent views made up for it along the way.

We were huffing and puffing when we reached the Alm. Just to be overtaken by mountain runners. That’s when you realize that you need to work out more.

But we decided we still deserved our (alcohol free) Weissbier to help with recovery. After all we needed to replenish our electrolytes.

For our way down we chose the trail along the “Way of the Cross” as described on Komoot. This part of the trail is not as beautiful as the Gelbe Gwänd but we were glad we did not have to walk as close to the edge of the canyon as our legs had gotten a bit wobbly.
